A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck southern New Zealand on February 22, 2011. Early reports are that several buildings in Christchurch have fallen and that there are multiple injuries and deaths. This powerful earthquake follows an even more powerful 7.1 magnitude quake that hit the same area on Sept. 4th of 2010 and caused and estimated $3 billion in damage.
This is just another reminder of the need to be prepared for earthquakes here in the United States. Although most Americans know that California and other parts of the west coast in the United States are at risk for major earthquakes, many are unaware that even in areas such as the mid-west there is a risk of devastating earthquakes.
What is the lesson? Be prepared for any emergency including a devastating earthquake with at least a 72 hour emergency kit designed to provide supplies to shelter-in-place or evacuate in the event of an earthquake or other major disaster.
