For those who were not personally affected by a disaster in 2010, it might not have seemed like such a bad year for natural disasters. But 2010's Worst Disasters in Photos reminds us that early in the year Haiti was hit by a devastating earthquake that killed 230,000 and injured another 300,000. This was followed by another devastating earthquake and tsunamis in Chile that killed 500 and displaced thousands.
Oh, and don't forget that this was the year that saw a volcanic eruption in Iceland shut shut down air travel over much of Europe. It was also the year of catastrophic wildfires in Russia and horrific flooding in Pakistan.
Overall, there were plenty of reminders that, no matter where you live, there is a need to be prepared for an emergency or disaster. As we head into 2011, it would be a good idea to add "Get an emergency kit" and "Make an emergency plan" to your list of New Year's resolutions.
