Referencing the devastating 8.8 earthquake in Chile, Marcia McNutt, director of the U.S. Geological Survey warns:
"It's not a matter of IF, only of WHEN an event like this strikes the people of the United States. Shame on us if we don't prepare."
McNutt said,"We know earthquakes are not uniformly distributed in time; they cluster. Now suddenly the earthquakes are lighting up again."
The 8.8 Chile earthquake this past weekend should remind us of the need for emergency preparedness no matter where we live. If you've been waiting for "another day" to get an emergency kit and survival supplies prepared, it's time to take some action.
Though we often think of California, Oregon and Washington State when considering earthquake risk in the United States, there is a significant earthquake threat even in the Midwest. No matter where you live, disaster preparation is just prudent risk management.
